President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Charles Kushner, a real estate developer and father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as the ambassador to France. Trump praised Kushner as a business leader, philanthropist, and dealmaker who will represent the country’s interests. The announcement also included congratulations to Kushner’s family for his nomination.
Charles Kushner was previously sentenced to two years in prison in 2005 for tax evasion, witness tampering, and illegal campaign donations. He was prosecuted by Chris Christie, who later became the governor of New Jersey and a political opponent of Trump. Despite this history, Trump pardoned Charles Kushner in 2020 as part of a series of pardons issued after his re-election loss.
In his announcement, Trump also praised Jared Kushner for his work in the White House on initiatives such as Operation Warp Speed, Criminal Justice Reform, and the Abraham Accords. Trump highlighted the importance of strengthening America’s partnership with France, one of its oldest allies.
While serving as governor of New Jersey, Christie had strongly criticized the Kushner case as “loathsome” and “disgusting.” However, the relationship between the Kushners and Trump appears to be strong, with both Jared and his wife Ivanka maintaining close ties to the former president.
