Louisiana residents with outstanding OMV fines can now reset their debts to the original amounts under a new reform law, providing relief from inflated penalties. Over 350,000 drivers are eligible to pay only the original fines rather than facing increased fees that could reach tens of thousands of dollars. This reform, championed by OMV Commissioner Dan Casey and Gov. Jeff Landry, aims to address the disproportionate penalization of residents due to escalating fines and fees for unpaid violations.
Drivers with unpaid fines have until December 31, 2024, to reset their debts to the original violation amount by contacting the agency. After this date, older debts will be referred to the Office of Debt Recovery, but will remain at the original fine amount with a reduced recovery fee. The referral period for delinquent debt has been extended to 180 days, giving drivers more time to address their fines. To start the reset process, drivers can check for unpaid fines online and contact the OMV to set up a payment plan.
