The iconic London celebrity haunt, The Groucho Club, has had its license suspended by Westminster City Council after the Metropolitan Police requested it. The reasons for the closure due to a “serious criminal offence” have not been disclosed by either party, but this is not the first time the club has faced allegations of illegal activities. Once a popular spot for celebrities such as Princess Diana, Kate Moss, Harry Styles, and Ant and Dec, the club has now fallen from grace.
Founded in 1985 to provide a modern members club with an inclusive environment regardless of gender, The Groucho Club quickly became a hotspot for famous faces like Rod Stewart, Freddie Mercury, and Liam Gallagher. Membership rules were strict, requiring current members to propose new ones, and celebrities were not always guaranteed entry. The club had a strict policy of no photos or videos, banned the use of mobile phones after 5pm, and even prohibited the wearing of string vests.
The club’s downfall began with the departure of front-of-house manager Bernie Katz, who had a reputation for discretion and partying with celebrities. Since then, the club has faced complaints from members about open drug taking and losing its unique feel. Following a rise in membership fees and a change in ownership in 2022, the club’s future is uncertain. A letter circulated among members declared the club “almost dead,” citing rising costs and the dissolution of the old membership committee as contributors to its downfall.
