Residents in East Baton Rouge Parish have voted on four proposed constitutional amendments and chosen their mayor-president in the recent elections. Additionally, the southeastern portion of the parish voted on giving their new municipal government access to sales tax revenue collected within its boundaries.
The constitutional amendments would impact the panel that examines judicial behavior, limit lawmakers’ ability to act quickly on certain bills, allow legislators to extend sessions, and eliminate mandatory tax sales for nonpayment of property taxes.
In other parishes, including East Feliciana, St. Helena, and West Feliciana, only statewide issues were on the ballot. Democratic incumbent Sharon Weston Broome faced Republican Sid Edwards in the mayoral race in East Baton Rouge Parish, while Gonzales in Ascension Parish was set to elect its first Black mayor.
Several other cities and parishes had races for mayor and voted on sales taxes for public safety and property tax renewals. The results of these elections can be found on WBRZ once the polls have closed.
