Louisiana voters pass all 4 amendments on Dec. 7 ballot measures

Louisiana voters approved four constitutional amendments during Saturday’s election with a low voter turnout of just over 10%. Amendment 1, which increases the Judiciary Commission’s appointees and gives the Supreme Court more control over disciplining judges, passed with 53% of the vote. Amendments 2 and 3 also passed, with Amendment 2 requiring a 48-hour review of budget bills before passage and Amendment 3 allowing for an extension of regular legislative sessions. Lastly, Amendment 4, which overhauls the state’s property tax sales system by auctioning off tax liens instead of properties, received 55% of the vote.

Supporters believe Amendment 1 will make the Judiciary Commission less biased by adding more nonlawyers, while opponents fear it could politicize the system. Amendments 2 and 3 aim to improve the budget process and legislative sessions, while Amendment 4 offers a more protective mechanism for delinquent taxpayers to retain their properties. The new property tax sales system, outlined in an 80-page legislation, is set to take effect in January 2026.
