A group of 17 Louisiana lawmakers has expressed concerns about the halftime entertainment for Super Bowl LIX being “less than family-friendly.” Senator Valarie Hodges, R-Denham Springs, penned a letter to the organizers, citing past performances by Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna that she found objectionable. Hodges, along with 15 leaders of pro-family organizations, called for performers at the upcoming halftime show to adhere to Louisiana’s community decency standards.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, in response to the letter, assured that this year’s halftime show will be family-friendly. The featured entertainer for Super Bowl LIX is Kendrick Lamar, the latest star showcased since the NFL partnered with Roc Nation in 2019.
Hodges requested that future contracts with the NFL include assurances about performers’ conduct aligning with Louisiana’s decency standards. She also emphasized that Louisiana taxpayers have invested $10 million in economic development initiatives for Super Bowl LIX, signaling their commitment to the event.
While expressing hope that the NFL and Super Bowl planners would consider her concerns, Hodges stated that it would be up to locals to address any performances that go beyond the parameters of good taste. The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the continuation of the partnership between the league and Roc Nation, despite allegations against Jay-Z. The response to Hodges’ letter highlights the balance between entertainment and community values at one of the biggest sporting events in the country.
