New York physician accused of providing Louisiana teenager with abortion pill

Louisiana has recently enacted a near-total abortion ban, making it a crime to access abortion medications without a prescription. Assistant District Attorney Tony Clayton revealed that a doctor had sent pills to a teenager’s mother, leading the teenager to take them at home alone. Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that the state would hold those breaking the law accountable. This follows a similar civil lawsuit filed against the same doctor in Texas. Dr Carpenter’s organization, the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, has called the indictment a threat to women’s reproductive healthcare access. New York Governor Hochul labeled the case as outrageous and vowed to protect the doctor, stating that New York has passed a shield law to protect doctors who provide abortion pills to patients in states where the procedure is outlawed. New York Attorney General Letitia James condemned the charges as a cowardly attempt to undermine providers. Abortion pills are now the most common method of ending pregnancies in the US, accounting for the majority of procedures.
