Doctor Margaret Carpenter, a New York physician, is facing charges after allegedly prescribing abortion pills to a woman in Louisiana. West Baton Rouge District Attorney Tony Clayton stated that conducting an abortion or distributing abortion-inducing drugs is against the law in Louisiana. The incident occurred when a mother in Port Allen ordered pills online from Nightingale Medical for her pregnant underage daughter, who experienced complications after taking the pills. The girl was rushed to a hospital in Baton Rouge and luckily recovered. Charges of criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs have been filed against the girl’s mother, Dr. Carpenter, and Nightingale Medical. The doctor is currently protected by New York State’s abortion shield law. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for supporting Carpenter, calling it sick and barbaric. Carpenter has not commented on the situation, and charges will not be pressed against the minor involved in the incident. Louisiana law now allows doctors convicted of performing abortions to face up to 15 years in prison.
