Louisiana High School Girls May Have a New Sport Option: Will LHSAA Approve?

High school sports in Louisiana are known for their dynamic and diverse competitions, with the recently concluded LHSAA Championships in football being a prime example. The games in the finals were intense and went down to the final moments on the clock at the Caesers’ Superdome in New Orleans.

While high school sports may just look like games to the untrained eye, student-athletes are also learning important life skills like responsibility, teamwork, and critical thinking. The LHSAA is always looking for ways to get more kids involved in sports and recently, the MHSAA in Mississippi has approved and sanctioned Flag Football as a new sport for girls.

The New Orleans Saints of the NFL have launched Saints Girls High School Flag Football, aiming to bring the sport to schools in Louisiana and Mississippi. With the potential for statewide sanctioned status by the LHSAA, Flag Football is gaining popularity as a fun and less physically demanding alternative to traditional football.

Flag Football is already played in 13 other states and will be featured in the Summer Olympics of 2028. The hope is that the sport will continue to grow and provide more opportunities for high school athletes in Louisiana. With the support of the Saints and other organizations, Flag Football is on its way to becoming a staple in high school sports programs across the state.
