New York physician and Louisiana parent charged with facilitating underage abortion using mifepristone – JURIST

A New York doctor, Dr. Margaret Carpenter, has been indicted by a Louisiana grand jury for enabling the termination of a minor’s pregnancy by prescribing an abortion pill. The grand jury also indicted the minor’s mother, who resides in Louisiana, for ordering the pill online and giving it to her daughter, causing the minor to experience a medical emergency. The Attorney General of Louisiana, Liz Murrill, supported the indictment, stating that sending abortion pills to the state and coercing others into having abortions is illegal.

The drug in question, Mifepristone, is a controlled substance under Louisiana law and its possession without a valid prescription is a felony punishable by imprisonment. The governor of New York, Kathy Houcul, has expressed her commitment to protecting Dr. Carpenter from extradition to Louisiana, citing the importance of reproductive freedom.

This case is not the first time Dr. Carpenter has faced legal consequences for prescribing abortion pills, as Texas also sued her for similar actions in December. Texas seeks to bar Dr. Carpenter from prescribing abortion pills in the state and fine her at least $100,000.
