Education Department employees put on leave after participating in diversity training under Trump administration, says Union official

Employees who attended a diversity training course initiated by Betsy DeVos during Trump’s administration have been put on paid leave as part of Trump’s targeting of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. At least 55 Department of Education employees have been placed on leave, including public affairs specialists, civil rights attorneys, and program managers. These employees are receiving full salaries and benefits but are not permitted to do any work-related tasks or enter the office. The move is seen as an attempt to pressure employees to resign or face termination.

The employees were encouraged to attend Diversity Change Agent training sessions, with a goal of training 400 employees according to emails obtained by NBC News. Some employees were members of committees related to DEI initiatives but did not specifically work in diversity roles. The union representing these employees believes that Trump’s executive order targeting DEI programs has led to the placement of workers on leave, causing fear and anger among employees who are worried about losing their jobs. Only a few employees at the Department of Education and Energy held positions directly related to diversity and inclusion, with most being in other roles within the agencies.

Overall, the move by the Trump administration is seen as an attempt to eliminate DEI initiatives across the federal government. Some employees feel they are being forced to choose between resigning and receiving severance or facing termination. The Department of Education did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the situation.
