Louisiana files lawsuit against New York doctor for telemedicine abortion pills

A grand jury in Louisiana has issued an arrest warrant for Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter, a New York doctor, for allegedly prescribing abortion medication to a minor in Louisiana. The girl experienced a medical emergency after taking the pills and was hospitalized. This case is the first criminal charge against an abortion provider since the Supreme Court’s 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade.

The arrest warrant comes after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Carpenter for a similar incident involving a pregnant resident of Collin County. Despite warnings from doctors about the dangers of reclassifying abortion drugs as controlled substances, Louisiana did so recently. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has stated she will not extradite Carpenter to Louisiana.

The Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, of which Carpenter is a co-founder, has spoken out against the charges, stating that access to abortion care is a fundamental human right. The organization provides assistance to clinicians looking to provide telemedicine abortion services across state lines, with New York enacting legislation to protect such providers in 2023.
