67 Victims of D.C. Midair Collision Found in Potomac River, Only 1 Still Unidentified

Authorities have recovered all 67 victims from the Potomac River less than a week after an American Airlines flight collided with a military helicopter in the Washington, D.C., area. Search and recovery efforts have concluded, with 66 people identified and efforts to identify the final victim ongoing. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred when the commercial flight collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter. There were 64 people on board the American Airlines flight, including young Olympic hopefuls returning from a figure skating competition, and three soldiers on the helicopter.

U.S. Figure Skating has expressed condolences for the loss of their members who were on board the flight, describing them as incredible athletes, caring family members, and dedicated coaches. The organization mourns their loss together with the global skating community. Both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the plane have been recovered for evaluation.

It has been reported that there was only one air traffic controller in the tower at the time of the crash, managing both helicopter and airplane traffic. Although FAA safety standards allow for this combined position, typically there would be a separate controller for helicopter traffic. Weather conditions were clear on the night of the crash, indicating that weather likely did not play a significant role in the cause of the collision.
