Louisiana assures Super Bowl visitors about oyster safety after recall, Where NOLA Eats

A recall of oysters from a harvesting area near New Orleans, known as Area 3, due to 15 cases of illness among those who consumed them led to a scramble by Louisiana officials and restaurants to manage the situation during Super Bowl week. The recall coincided with the inaugural New Orleans OysterNight event, causing concern among tourists and the local restaurant industry.

The recall affects oysters harvested from an area east of Lake Borgne and north of Eloi Bay since January 10. Those who became ill experienced norovirus-like symptoms, prompting the Louisiana Department of Health to suspect contamination in the oysters. Restaurants quickly pulled oysters from Area 3 and secured supplies from alternative harvesting areas to maintain their oyster service.

Despite the recall, health officials reassured the public that oysters harvested from other coastal areas were safe to consume. Restaurants participating in OysterNight continued with the event, offering special oyster dishes and contributing shells to the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana’s reef rebuilding efforts. The incident highlighted the ability of the local seafood industry to adapt quickly to ensure the safety of consumers during the ongoing Super Bowl festivities.
