Louisiana closes easternmost oyster harvesting areas and issues shellfish recall

The Louisiana Department of Health has shut down oyster harvesting in Area 3 east of Lake Borgne and issued a recall for oysters caught since Jan. 10. Fifteen people have fallen ill with a norovirus-like sickness after eating oysters from this area. While their illnesses were not life-threatening, two people were hospitalized and later discharged. The closure and recall only affect oysters from this specific area, and all other Louisiana seafood is safe for consumption. Norovirus symptoms include nausea, cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea, usually appearing 12-48 hours after exposure. Oysters harvested outside of Area 3 are safe to consume. The closure is expected to last at least 21 days, and the area will reopen once oysters meet sanitation standards. Contaminated oysters can lead to norovirus, but the natural cycle of tides cleanses oyster waters. Those who suspect they’ve been sickened by contaminated oysters are urged to report it to the state health department.
