The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team has made program history by reaching No. 23 in the Women’s Mid Major Top 25 poll for the first time. Led by head coach Ayla Guzzardo, the Lady Lions have an impressive record of 18-3 overall and 12-0 in league play, making them the lone undefeated team in the Southland Conference. Their recent victories over Lamar and New Orleans helped them move up in the rankings and extend their winning streak.
With a strong focus on defense, Southeastern ranks high in scoring defense, steals, turnover margin, and assist/turnover ratio. They are among only four teams in the nation with a perfect conference record, alongside powerhouse programs like UCLA and UConn. Coach Guzzardo credits the hard work of her staff and players, as well as the support of the Hammond community, for the team’s success.
The Lady Lions are set to face off against HCU in a rematch in Houston, Texas, with the game being televised on ESPN+. Fans can follow the team on social media for updates and information on purchasing tickets. Southeastern Athletics has also implemented a clear bag policy for all ticketed events to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
