Continued Evacuation of Santorini Island in Greece as Tremors Persist

Hundreds of people are leaving Greece’s popular tourist destination of Santorini due to ongoing seismic activity. The island has experienced hundreds of small earthquakes in recent days, causing buildings to shake and sparking fears of a major earthquake. So far, about 10,000 people have left the island, leaving behind a population of around 15,000. Safety measures have been put in place, including halting construction and emptying pools to reduce the burden on the ground. Authorities have also restricted access to high-risk areas and have emergency responders on alert. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reassured the public that the state is ready for any possibility. Seismologists suggest that the high seismic activity may last for days or weeks. While some ferry routes have been canceled due to rough seas, flights to and from Santorini are not currently affected. Despite the ongoing tremors, locals and officials have noted that the shaking has lessened on Wednesday. Santorini is known for its volcanic history, with its current shape formed following one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history around 1600 BC. The last eruption in the area occurred in 1950. The island typically has a booming tourist industry in the summer, but with the off-season in progress, it is easier for residents to leave.
