Trump fires the head of the National Archives

President Donald Trump has dismissed National Archivist Colleen Shogan, following through on his vow to change the leadership of the agency involved in the criminal case against him regarding classified documents. White House official Sergio Gor announced the dismissal, thanking Shogan for her service without indicating her replacement. Shogan confirmed her termination on LinkedIn without citing a reason. Trump had previously stated his intention to replace Shogan, mentioning that a new archivist would be appointed.

The National Archives alerted the Justice Department in 2022 that Trump may have mishandled classified documents by not returning requested records upon leaving office. The FBI conducted a criminal investigation, finding additional documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. However, a federal judge dismissed the case, arguing the appointment of the special counsel was unconstitutional.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has dismissed officials involved in investigations against Trump, including Justice Department lawyers and FBI agents. Lawsuits have been filed against the DOJ by FBI agents who claim a survey was used to target them for dismissal. Trump has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to any wrongdoing related to the mishandling of classified documents.
