The U.S. Senate has approved a $895 billion military spending bill, with $105 million allocated for projects in Louisiana. The bill, known as the National Defense Appropriations Act, includes a 14.5% raise for junior enlisted troops and funding for new warships, aircraft, and weapons. The bill also provides funding for the construction of facilities on military bases.
In Louisiana, Fort Johnson will receive $50 million for a new Rotational Unit Billeting Area, while the Louisiana National Guard will get $33 million for improvements to the Lafayette National Guard Readiness Center. Additionally, Barksdale Air Force Base is slated to receive $22 million for a new child development center addition.
Despite bipartisan support for the defense authorization act in the past, this year’s bill faced some dissent and delays. House Republicans added provisions banning military insurance for transgender medical care and the use of Critical Race Theory. However, House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer argued for compromise and urged senators to pass the bill.
Senator Bill Cassidy praised the bill and its Louisiana projects for strengthening America’s security. The bill is now awaiting President Joe Biden’s signature, which is expected soon.
