Alton “Red” Franklin, the iconic Louisiana high school football coach, has sadly passed away at the age of 89. Throughout his 35-year tenure at Haynesville High School, Franklin led the Golden Tornadoes to an impressive 11 state championships and four runner-up titles, establishing the team as a dominant force in state prep football. His teams made it to the state playoffs in 31 seasons, with eight unbeaten campaigns, and he finished with a remarkable record of 366-76-8. In 2010, Franklin was honored for his remarkable contributions to high school athletics with an induction into the National High School Hall of Fame, as well as being recognized in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions, and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Franklin’s legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport of football will be remembered by fans, players, and colleagues alike. He will forever be celebrated as a true champion of Louisiana high school football.
