International authorities are searching for University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, who disappeared while on a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic. Konanki, 20, went missing while visiting Punta Cana with a group of students. She was last seen in the early hours of Thursday morning, but her disappearance wasn’t reported until later that night. Konanki’s family contacted the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia to report her disappearance.
Konanki was traveling with five other female University of Pittsburgh students. The group went to the beach in the morning, but Konanki did not return with them. Dominican authorities have obtained video of the group on the beach, and authorities are examining all possibilities, from accidental causes to foul play. The FBI and the Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic are also involved in the investigation.
Defensa Civil La Altagracia, the local emergency operations agency in the Dominican Republic, has deployed search teams by sea and land to find Konanki. The State Department classifies the Dominican Republic as a level 2 travel advisory, advising caution due to the risk of violent crime.
Authorities are prioritizing obtaining video evidence, examining cellphone records, and speaking to witnesses. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with Dominican authorities to search for Konanki in the coastal area of Bávaro. Konanki’s university has offered full support in the search efforts. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Konanki’s disappearance, authorities remain hopeful for a positive outcome.
