Louisiana Includes “Gulf of America” in K-12 Social Studies Curriculum

The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has announced that they will be updating their social studies standards to include President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This change was recommended by Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley and approved on March 12.

Dr. Brumley stated that updating the academic standards will ensure alignment with the leadership of Trump and Louisiana Governor Landry. The LDOE is currently working with publishers to incorporate these updates, which will take effect in the 2025-2026 school year.

This decision has sparked debate and controversy among educators and citizens in Louisiana, with some questioning the necessity of the change and others supporting it as a way to honor the current political leadership.
