Louisiana woman enters a plea of not guilty to a felony charge in landmark abortion case

A woman in Louisiana pleaded not guilty to felony charges after allegedly obtaining abortion pills from a New York doctor and giving them to her teenage daughter to terminate a pregnancy. This case has sparked a cross-state legal battle between Louisiana and New York, as it may be the first instance of criminal charges against a doctor accused of sending abortion pills to another state. The Louisiana woman was indicted for criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs, which is a felony in the state.

The indictment came after Louisiana reclassified mifepristone and misoprostol as controlled dangerous substances. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that these drugs are safe and effective for ending pregnancies through the 10th week. Pills have become the most common method of abortion in the U.S., leading to political and legal battles over abortion access.

The woman requested abortion medication online from Dr. Margaret Carpenter in New York for her daughter, who experienced a medical emergency after taking the pills. Carpenter is also facing a felony charge for supplying the drugs. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has demanded Carpenter’s extradition, but New York Governor Kathy Hochul refused to sign the order.

In a separate case, Carpenter was ordered to pay a penalty for allegedly breaking a Texas law by prescribing abortion medication via telemedicine. Physicians in Louisiana convicted of performing illegal abortions can face up to 15 years in prison, fines, and the loss of their medical license. The legal battles highlight the ongoing controversy surrounding abortion access and laws in the U.S.
