House Speaker Proposes Adding Fifth Building to Pentagon Barracks Amid Renovation Debate
The Pentagon Barracks in Baton Rouge offer state legislators the perk of affordable housing, a historic building close to the Capitol. However, the complex is in need of a complete renovation due to frequent leaks and flooding issues. The proposed renovation would require residents to move out for a year.
House Speaker Phillip DeVillier has floated the idea of constructing a fifth building within the complex to allow legislators to move into the new building individually during renovations, thus avoiding displacement. The estimated cost of the additional building would be $10 million, on top of the $31 million already earmarked for the renovation of the existing structures.
The proposal, which is still in the early stages, aims to maintain the historical integrity of the Pentagon Barracks. State officials and the State Historic Preservation Office would need to approve the plans before construction can begin. The renovation project would be funded by the House’s account, which currently holds $40 million.
The Pentagon Barracks have a rich history dating back to the 19th century and are considered a coveted housing option for legislators. The competition for spots is high due to the limited availability. Past speakers have used the apartments as incentives for legislative allies.
The proposed renovations aim to address structural issues and upgrade the complex to better accommodate legislators. DeVillier’s proposal, if approved, would provide a solution to the ongoing challenges faced by residents while preserving the historical significance of the Pentagon Barracks.
