New Orleans officials could soon be banned from using city money to buy alcohol while on work trips, as proposed in a new ordinance tightening City Council travel spending rules. This move comes after Council Vice President Helena Moreno introduced a proposal to align city policy with state law, which already prohibits alcohol reimbursements for state employees on work travel. The ordinance was passed in February to address concerns over excessive spending and Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s attendance at a D.C. conference amid a city travel ban and fiscal crisis has raised further criticism. Despite the Mayor’s Office claiming that the trip was planned before the new ordinance, City Council President JP Morrell has labeled it as “patently unlawful.” The city council has now written a letter expressing disapproval of the Mayor’s trip and calling for no city funds to be used for the expenses related to it. The Mayor’s Office has responded by stating that the city will not incur any costs for the Mayor’s participation in the conference.
