A man in Austin, Texas was charged with intoxication manslaughter after a late-night wreck involving over a dozen vehicles on Interstate 35 resulted in the deaths of five people, including three adults, a child, and an infant. The crash occurred just before 11:30 p.m. and 11 people were taken to hospitals. Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, faces five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault. The southbound lanes of I-35 were closed following the crash, which left a stretch of the interstate covered in mangled vehicles and debris. The circumstances of the wreck have not been detailed by police, who are still early in their investigation. The collision was described as “very large and very complex” by police Officer Austin Zarling. Edgar Viera, who heard the crash and went to assist, described the scene as difficult to witness as they tried to help without the proper tools to open the vehicles. Araya is in custody at Travis County Jail, although it is not clear if he has an attorney. The southbound lanes of I-35 remained closed until around 1 p.m. on Friday before reopening.
