‘Snow White’ debuts with a dreamy $43 million at box office

The live-action version of Disney’s “Snow White” opened in theaters with lackluster ticket sales of $43 million, falling short of expectations and facing controversy over the handling of the dwarfs and comments made by star Rachel Zegler. The film also received poor reviews, contributing to its disappointing box office performance. Despite earning $87.3 million globally, it did not meet initial projections of reaching $100 million. This has raised questions about Disney’s strategy of remaking its animated classics in live-action form.

The film faced backlash for attempts to modernize the story, with concerns raised by actor Peter Dinklage and right-wing commentators. Delays, reshoots, and a high budget added to the challenges facing the production. In comparison, other Disney remakes like “The Lion King” and “Cinderella” performed better at the box office. With upcoming remakes of “Moana” and “Tangled,” Disney’s approach to live-action adaptations is under scrutiny.

In the same weekend, Warner Bros.’s “Alto Knights” starring Robert De Niro flopped with just $3.2 million in ticket sales, while “Magazine Dreams” opened to $700,000. Overall, the 2025 box office has been disappointing, with a 6.9% decline from last year and a 38.6% drop from 2019. “Snow White” faces little competition in the coming weeks and received a “B+” CinemaScore from audiences.
