President Donald Trump announced on Monday that any country purchasing oil or gas from Venezuela will face a 25% tariff on trades with the US starting on April 2. Trump justified this move by making baseless claims about criminals being sent to the US from Venezuela, as well as citing the country’s hostile actions towards the US. Trump also referred to April 2 as “LIBERATION DAY IN AMERICA”.
This decision comes after the US revoked a license granted to Chevron in 2022 to operate in Venezuela citing issues with President Nicolás Maduro’s lack of progress on electoral reforms and migrant returns. There have been discussions on extending Chevron’s license by 60 days and imposing financial penalties on other countries doing business with Venezuela.
Additionally, Trump is planning to meet with his cabinet secretaries, including Elon Musk, for the third time, focusing on cuts and productivity in the government. Trump’s administration deported more than 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador, claiming they were members of a terrorist group, despite a judge blocking the measure.
Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court is hearing a case challenging Louisiana’s congressional map based on racial gerrymandering. Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, passed away at the age of 49 after battling brain cancer. Also, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Trump discussed progress on a new economic deal between the two countries, with the UK emphasizing that any deal will only be made in the national interest.
