Barr expresses outrage over Louisiana’s legal action against energy companies for long-term erosion issues

Former Attorney General William Barr has penned a letter to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, warning her against supporting lawsuits targeting oil companies like Chevron. The letter comes after a recent ruling that ordered Chevron to pay $745 million to a coastal parish. Barr cited President Trump’s executive order protecting American energy production and expressed concern over the lawsuits seeking tens of billions in damages tied to land loss. He argued that the lawsuits are subjecting energy producers to excessive fines and are devoid of legal merit. Barr also raised issues of retroactivity and due process, suggesting that the federal government may be responsible for the majority of land loss blamed on energy companies. The letter was written on behalf of several organizations and warned of the impact on LNG plants, energy investments, and American energy dominance if the lawsuits continue. Louisiana Attorney General Landry and plaintiffs’ attorney Carmouche have not responded to requests for comment. Attorney Jimmy Faircloth, representing state agencies in the lawsuit, emphasized the positive impact of the energy industry on jobs and suggested that the case focuses on past failures to enforce regulations.
