Shrimp Fisherman from Louisiana Files Lawsuit Against Walmart for Using His Photo to Promote Imported Shrimp

Louisiana shrimper George Barisich is suing Walmart for using a photograph of his shrimp boat, the FJG, without permission in an ad for imported shrimp. Barisich, whose father built the FJG 69 years ago, claims that the ad misleads consumers into thinking the shrimp is local when it is actually imported. The lawsuit also accuses Walmart of violating a local law in St. Bernard Parish prohibiting the sale of certain imported seafood. Barisich’s attorney, Sidney Torres III, argues that Walmart’s use of Louisiana-related imagery is deceptive and illegal. In addition to seeking monetary damages, the lawsuit asks for a court order preventing Walmart from using the FJG photograph without permission and to confirm that the retailer broke the local law. Walmart responded by stating that they have asked the store to only sell Gulf shrimp below the sign featuring the FJG. Barisich, president of the United Commercial Fishermen’s Association, is seeking justice and compensation for the unauthorized use of his boat’s image.
