Idaho teen shot by police without questioning or listening, aunt claims

Ana Vazquez, the aunt of 17-year-old Victor Perez, criticized the Idaho police officers who shot her nephew nine times, leaving him in critical condition. The incident occurred when Perez, who is autistic and has cerebral palsy, grabbed a knife during a family barbecue. A neighbor called the police for help, not knowing about Perez’s medical conditions or mental health crisis. Videos of the shooting sparked protests in the city of Pocatello. Mayor Brian Blad expressed condolences to the Perez family and assured that a thorough investigation was underway. The officers involved were put on administrative leave, as per standard police policy.

According to Police Chief Roger Schei, officers repeatedly asked Perez to drop the knife, but he advanced towards them. Vazquez stated that the family tried to take the knife from Perez without him threatening anyone. The family, originally from Puerto Rico, has been overwhelmed by the support from the Idaho community. Perez remains unconscious in the hospital, and his family is hopeful for his recovery. The Aunt criticized the police for not taking the time to understand the situation properly before resorting to lethal force. The family is anxiously waiting for any signs of improvement in Perez’s condition.
