Louisiana’s Anti-Fluoride Bill Fails to Improve Public Health

Three Louisiana state senators, Mike Fési, Patrick McMath, and Heather Cloud, have introduced Senate Bill 2 to ban water fluoridation in the state. The bill, if passed, would end Louisiana’s water fluoridation program and prevent cities from adding fluoride to their water systems. This move follows Utah’s recent ban on water fluoridation.

Health experts, including New Orleans city health director Dr. Jennifer Avegno, warn of the potential health risks this bill could pose, pointing out the benefits of water fluoridation for oral and physical health. Dr. Avegno cites Calgary, Alberta, Canada, as an example of negative consequences seen after ending water fluoridation.

Critics of the bill argue that it could lead to increased healthcare costs, especially for parents, due to preventable dental issues. Dr. Avegno blames misinformation for fueling the anti-fluoridation movement, emphasizing that the levels of fluoride added to water are well below dangerous levels.

The bill’s sponsors have been contacted for comments on the issue.
