Essential Information You Should Be Aware Of

The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology this weekend, providing more efficient placement of the virtual offside line and enhancing the viewing experience for fans. Developed in collaboration with PGMOL and Genius Sports, the system will automate key elements of the offside decision-making process for VAR.

The technology will suggest a “kick point” and automatically create offside lines for close calls, ultimately saving time and improving the speed, efficiency, and consistency of the decision-making process. The system uses up to 30 cameras mounted around stadiums to track player movements and ball placement, flagging any offside infractions automatically to the VAR.

While the system is semi-automated, with human input still required to confirm decisions, it will not impact the accuracy of offside calls. Decision visuals will be generated and sent to broadcast and stadium screens, clearly indicating offside or onside calls.

The system aims to reduce delays caused by manual processes currently used by VAR, allowing offside decisions to be made more quickly. However, in certain scenarios, such as when multiple players obstruct the view, manual intervention may still be necessary.

Overall, the introduction of semi-automated offside technology is expected to streamline the decision-making process and provide a seamless viewing experience for fans, without compromising the integrity of the competition.
