Military officials announce that Israeli forces have successfully surrounded Gaza’s Rafah

Israeli forces have completed the encirclement of Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah, part of a plan to seize more areas of the enclave. The military has issued evacuation warnings to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Rafah, forcing them into a limited space bordered by the sea. Troops have begun seizing an area known as the Morag Axis, which was a former Israeli settlement located between Rafah and Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled Rafah, which borders Egypt to the south, as a result of the Israeli offensive. The military recently established the Morag route, separating Rafah and Khan Younis. The offensive was launched in response to an attack by Hamas on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in many casualties and hostages. Since then, more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed and much of Gaza is now in ruins.

The Israeli campaign, which restarted in March after a ceasefire was abandoned, is intended to continue until the remaining hostages are freed and Hamas is removed from Gaza. Hamas insists on a deal that would end the war and has rejected calls to disarm. A Hamas delegation is expected in Cairo to discuss new truce proposals.
