Tort reform gets off to a strong start in Louisiana’s Legislature

Louisiana lawmakers are fast-tracking a series of tort reform bills in an effort to lower high insurance costs in the state. Six bills have already cleared committee, with two headline-grabbing measures from Rep. Brian Glorioso and Rep. Emily Chenevert. Glorioso’s bill aims to limit inflated awards by allowing juries to see both billed and paid amounts for medical treatment in injury lawsuits, while Chenevert’s bill would change Louisiana’s legal standard for fault to bar plaintiffs from recovering damages if they are more than 50% at fault in an accident.

Supporters of the bills say they will help lower insurance premiums by discouraging excessive lawsuits. However, critics argue that past tort reform efforts have not delivered real savings and have raised concerns about fairness in the proposed legislation. Despite skepticism, both bills have advanced favorably in the legislative process, signaling that lawmakers are committed to continuing their push for tort reform in Louisiana.
