Houthi rebel media reports at least 58 killed in U.S. attack on Yemen fuel port

The United States launched a deadly strike on a fuel port in Yemen, killing at least 58 people and injuring 126 others, according to the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV. The U.S. military said the strikes were aimed at cutting off a source of fuel for the Iran-backed Houthi militant group. The U.S. has vowed to continue its large-scale attacks on the Houthis unless they cease their attacks on Red Sea shipping. The U.S. Central Command did not provide a response to the Houthis’ casualty figure but reiterated that the strikes were meant to degrade the economic power of the Houthis. The Houthis have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea in protest over the war in Gaza, launching dozens of drone and missile attacks since November 2023. They stopped attacks during a ceasefire but have threatened to resume them following renewed Israeli assaults on Gaza. In March, a previous round of U.S. attacks killed over 50 people, according to Houthi officials. The recent strikes in Yemen mark one of the deadliest incidents in the U.S. military operation against the Houthis and have raised concerns about the escalating violence in the region.
