State Rep. Matthew Willard Announces Run for New Orleans City Council

State Representative Matthew Willard, a Gentilly native and head of the Louisiana House Democratic Caucus, has officially announced his candidacy for an at-large seat on the New Orleans City Council. The seat is currently held by Vice President Helena Moreno, who is running for mayor in the upcoming election.

Willard’s candidacy sets the stage for a competitive race, particularly against his fellow state representative, Delisha Boyd, who is also vying for Moreno’s seat. "We deserve a safe, clean city that is free of litter, blight and discarded tires,” Willard stated, emphasizing a vision for economic development and job opportunities as key parts of his campaign platform.

Other potential contenders for the at-large position include Senators Jimmy Harris and Joe Bouie, who are still weighing their options amid increased focus on the upcoming legislative session. Former at-large member Arnie Fielkow has confirmed he will not pursue the position.

The election will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the City Council. With outgoing Mayor LaToya Cantrell set to leave office, the new council must navigate the challenges of governance that have long plagued New Orleans, including infrastructure issues and community well-being.

Willard, who has represented District 97 since 2020, comes from a well-regarded New Orleans political family. He was elected chair of the House Democratic Caucus earlier this year and has been vocal in opposing Gov. Jeff Landry’s conservative policies, which have included initiatives like reinstating the death penalty and altering congressional maps.

As campaign finance reports reveal that Willard has about $91,000 readily available, he is entering a crowded field as the fall elections approach, setting the stage for a transformative period in New Orleans politics.
