Florida Man and His Dog Fatality Suspected in Bear Attack

Authorities are investigating a suspected bear attack that led to the deaths of 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog in Collier County, Florida. The incident occurred near the community of Jerome, where they were found dead at Markel’s home early Monday morning. Wildlife officials reported that the man and his dog were located a couple of hundred yards apart, indicating that the attacks may have happened at different times.

George Reynaud, a spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), confirmed the attack was caused by bears, although it remains unclear if a single bear or multiple bears were responsible. In response, officers established a perimeter around the area and deployed drones to aid in the search for the animals. Bear traps have also been set in the region where the attack occurred.

DNA evidence has been collected from the scene, which will assist investigators in determining the specifics of the incident. Given the habitat in the area, it is likely that the bears involved are Florida black bears, the only bear species native to the state. The FWC estimates that approximately 4,050 Florida black bears live in the region.

The tragic event underscores the potential dangers of wildlife interactions, especially given the proximity of human residences to natural habitats. As authorities continue their investigation and search efforts, the community is on alert for additional bear activity.
