Louisiana Bill to Increase Job Search Requirements for Unemployment Benefits
Louisiana may soon impose stricter job search requirements for residents receiving unemployment insurance. House Bill 153, which recently passed the state House with a vote of 73-24, mandates that individuals must complete five work search actions each week—up from the current three, which are not codified.
Proponents of the bill, including Rep. Troy Hebert, argue that increasing the criteria aims to expedite the return of jobless Louisianans to work. Hebert believes the added requirements are not onerous, suggesting they equate to one additional action per day.
Critics, however, contend that the new requirements could disproportionately burden rural residents and single parents who may face limited job opportunities and lengthy commutes. Rep. Ed Larvadain III highlighted concerns that the bill may force individuals to relocate in search of employment.
The legislation also proposes disqualification from benefits for missed job interviews or assigned job training. The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) emphasizes that its goal is not punitive; it aims to help individuals find work effectively. Additionally, Louisiana’s unemployment benefits are among the lowest in the nation, with only 12% of unemployed individuals receiving assistance.
