Maui Residents Find New Home in Florida’s Devonshire Amid Health Care Concerns
After a decade in their dream home on Maui, Azar and Robert "Bob" Sheldon faced an unexpected challenge: limited access to specialized health care. After Azar developed asthma, the couple, disheartened by the need for frequent flights to Oahu for treatment, began searching for a more accommodating senior living option.
Their search led them to Devonshire, an Erickson Senior Living community located in the picturesque setting of PGA National, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The couple was drawn to Devonshire’s serene 26-acre campus filled with vibrant flowers and palm trees. The community’s continuing care neighborhood, Chatsworth, provided them reassurance for future health needs.
The Sheldons joined Devonshire’s Priority List, allowing them to secure a place in line for residence while exploring the community further through a "Live the Life" stay. This overnight experience allowed them to sample amenities and connect with residents. Bob emphasized the value Devonshire offered, stating, “We couldn’t find anything that came close.”
With plans solidified, they sold their house in Maui and downsized to just essential belongings. Their journey concluded on Christmas Eve, 2023, when they arrived at their new home.
Settling into Devonshire, they reveled in their surroundings, noting the abundance of wildlife—far more than they experienced in Sanibel. Azar and Bob appreciate the community feel, enjoying both privacy and opportunities to socialize with neighbors.
“The maintenance staff is wonderful,” Bob shared, highlighting the convenience of worry-free living. Azar quipped, “As I tell Bob, ‘Happy wife, happy life.’ I am very lucky.”
