Port of Ponce Welcomes Icon of the Seas, Largest Cruise Ship in the World
The Port of Ponce has made history by welcoming the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, in its inaugural visit to Puerto Rico today. This event marks a significant moment for the Puerto Rico tourism sector, promising to revitalize the economy, particularly in the southern and western regions of the island.
Willianette Robles Cancel, director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), was on-site to greet visitors, emphasizing that this docking enhances Puerto Rico’s status as a premier Caribbean destination. In partnership with the Port of Ponce Authority and local municipalities, a comprehensive plan was implemented to streamline the experience for the ship’s approximately 10,000 passengers and crew members.
To enrich their visit, the PRTC collaborated with Royal Caribbean to offer an array of 15 onboard excursions, including guided tours of Ponce’s historic sites, eco- and agrotourism ventures, gastronomic tastings, and cultural experiences. Tourists will also have the opportunity to enjoy Ponce’s natural beauty through beach and cave visits.
A welcome center has been set up featuring reception tents and areas for prepaid tour dispatch. Notably, free transportation to the urban center and special transit services for crew shopping have been arranged, alongside cultural events scheduled throughout the town to enhance the visitor experience.
Anticipation builds as Governor Jenniffer González Colón is slated to hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. today, participating in welcome activities for the Icon of the Seas. This landmark event showcases Puerto Rico as an emerging leader in cruise tourism, aiming to deliver both a memorable experience for visitors and a boost for the local economy.
