Reverend Taza Green Sr. Honored with Street Renaming on General Meyer

City Council Renames Algiers Avenue After Local Pastor

NEW ORLEANS — In a unanimous decision, the New Orleans City Council has renamed a section of General Meyer Avenue, located between Sullen Place and Bennett Street in Algiers, as Reverend Taza Green Sr. Avenue. This change honors Reverend Green, a beloved pastor of Second Baptist Church, who was deeply respected in the community.

Despite opposition from the City Planning Commission—which raised concerns about the street bearing three names—the council proceeded with the renaming. This move aligns with the council’s ongoing efforts to reassess and rename public landmarks associated with problematic historical figures. One notable previous effort includes the renaming of Lee Circle to Harmony Circle.

The newly designated Reverend Taza Green Sr. Avenue covers a half-mile stretch close to the Plaquemines Parish line, including Newton Street, which connects to Behrman Highway before transitioning into General Meyer Avenue. General Meyer, named after a former U.S. congressman and Confederate officer, was one of 38 streets identified for possible renaming by the council’s Street Renaming Commission, formed in 2020 to confront racially charged public reminders.
