BR Bishop Congratulates Pope Leo XIV, Celebrates Election as Source of Pride for South Louisiana

Historic Election of Pope Leo XIV Resonates in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE – The Baton Rouge Diocese is celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first pope born in the United States. Bishop Michael Duca extended his congratulations, highlighting the pride this brings to the people of south Louisiana, given the Pope’s familial ties to the region.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, was born in Chicago but spent significant time in Peru. Shortly after his election, historian Jari Christopher Honora uncovered a marriage certificate confirming that Prevost’s maternal grandparents wed in New Orleans in 1887, establishing a stronger connection to the city.

Duca interpreted the Pope’s choice of name as indicative of a focus on the Church’s social teachings, emphasizing solidarity and a commitment to the marginalized. In his inaugural remarks, the Pope urged the Church to stand united and promote the Gospel through peace and missionary efforts.

Local leaders, including New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond, expressed eagerness to explore Prevost’s family history further. U.S. Representative Troy Carter emphasized the significance of the Pope’s Louisiana roots, celebrating the rich tapestry of the state’s diverse faith community.
