Unsealed Documents in NYC Mayor’s Criminal Case Illuminate Investigation Details

Federal agents investigating New York City Mayor Eric Adams were actively pursuing evidence and search warrants shortly before the Justice Department decided to drop the corruption case against him, according to newly released documents. This federal inquiry, probing whether Adams accepted improper campaign contributions, began in August 2021 while he was still Brooklyn’s borough president. Throughout the investigation, Adams maintained that his prosecution was politically motivated due to his later criticisms of former President Biden’s immigration policies.

The investigation gained public attention in November 2023, when the FBI seized Adams’ phones and an iPad post-event. He was charged months later for allegedly accepting illegal campaign contributions and benefits from individuals, including a Turkish diplomat, seeking to influence him. However, on February 10, 2024, after President Trump took office, new Justice Department leaders instructed prosecutors to dismiss the charges, claiming it was impeding Adams’ cooperation with federal immigration policies. This directive led to upheaval within the federal prosecutor’s office, prompting several resignations, including that of Manhattan’s top prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon.

Investigators were on the verge of filing additional charges for obstruction of justice days before the case was dismissed. The unsealed records further detail multiple search warrants and investigations related to Adams, including a warrant for his partner’s home and the mayor’s official residence, Gracie Mansion, as authorities sought to gather evidence about alleged illicit campaign contributions.

Despite the case against him being dropped, Adams opted to run as an independent in the upcoming general election, skipping the Democratic primary, which reflects the uncertain trajectory of his political career, despite claims of vindication following the case’s dismissal.
