Louisiana RB Dre’lyn Washington Joins Alabama Football: Implications for the Tide

Alabama Football Secures Transfer of RB Dre’lyn Washington for 2025 Season

Alabama football is enhancing its running back lineup ahead of the 2025 season with the addition of Dre’lyn Washington, a veteran redshirt junior from Louisiana. Washington announced his transfer to the Crimson Tide on Monday, marking his entry as the ninth player to join the squad via the transfer portal, alongside notable recruits like Miami receiver Isaiah Horton and Florida defensive end Kelby Collins.

Washington, a former three-star recruit from Hemphill, Texas, has established himself as a reliable offensive contributor during his tenure at Louisiana. In 2023, he tallied a career-high 92 carries for 515 rushing yards, becoming the leading returning rusher for the Ragin’ Cajuns ahead of the 2024 season. Washington shined in a standout game against Arkansas State, where he rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

With Justice Haynes recently transferring out, the Alabama running back room sees Jam Miller stepping up as the primary option. However, Miller’s performance at the end of the last season raised concerns, as he averaged less than four yards per carry in the final five games. Although Richard Young is anticipated to take on a crucial role alongside Miller, the depth chart lacks extensive experience.

Washington’s addition is expected to bolster competitive depth in the running back position, having previously averaged over 40 rushing yards per game in his last season at Louisiana. This strategic transfer may prove vital as Alabama looks to fortify its offensive lineup for the upcoming season.
