DOZENS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES CONTINUE MANHUNT FOR ESCAPED INMATES IN NEW ORLEANS
NEW ORLEANS, La. — As the third day of a manhunt unfolds, at least a dozen law enforcement agencies are actively searching for seven of the ten men who escaped from a New Orleans jail through a hole behind a toilet. The Louisiana State Police confirmed that these men remain at large and detailed that the multi-agency task force is scouring the region for them.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill emphasized that recovering the prisoners and ensuring public safety are top priorities. Governor Jeff Landry is scheduled to hold a news conference later today to provide updates on the situation. So far, one inmate has been recaptured due to a public tip.
Rewards for information leading to the capture of the remaining fugitives have been significantly increased, now totaling $12,000. The group of escapees, aged between 19 and 42, face serious charges ranging from aggravated assault to murder. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stressed the danger the fugitives pose but urged the public not to panic.
Sheriff Susan Hutson has pointed to "defective locks" as a key issue allowing the escape and has long advocated for infrastructure repairs at the Orleans Justice Center.
