Manhunt Continues in New Orleans After Jailbreak
NEW ORLEANS, La. (AP) — The manhunt for seven inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center entered its third day on Sunday. The men fled through a hole behind a toilet, prompting a coordinated response from at least a dozen law enforcement agencies. While one of the fugitives has been recaptured thanks to a public tip, the remaining seven are still at large, with authorities warning the public that they are considered dangerous.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill emphasized that the top priorities are recovering the prisoners, ensuring public safety, and stabilizing the jail staff. Governor Jeff Landry scheduled a news conference for 5 p.m. for updates on the ongoing search.
The inmates, aged 19 to 42, face various charges including aggravated assault and murder. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson noted that the jailbreak resulted from "defective locks" and revealed that she has persistently voiced concerns regarding the facility’s infrastructure.
The FBI, in collaboration with Crime Stoppers and the ATF, has increased the reward for information leading to the capture of the remaining fugitives to $12,000. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant.
