Southeastern Lions Upset in Southland Conference Championship Showdown
HAMMOND, La. – In a surprising turn of events, the top-seeded Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team was defeated by No. 4-seeded Northwestern State, 11-8, in a thrilling contest at the Southland Conference Baseball Championships on Saturday.
Southeastern (38-16) initially seized control of the game, building a 7-3 lead through the first four innings. The scoring began with Dane Watts’ leadoff triple, enabling TJ Salvaggio’s sacrifice fly to tie the game. The Lions surged ahead with Logan Walters and Jude Hall contributing solo home runs in the second inning, marking their fourth and ninth homers of the season, respectively. Walters then delivered a bases-loaded triple in the third, extending the SLU advantage.
However, Northwestern State (35-20) mounted a formidable comeback. After both teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning, the Demons rallied in the eighth, scoring a remarkable seven runs to take the lead decisively. Left-hander Corbin Talley secured the win with an impressive 4.1 innings of shutout relief, allowing only three hits. Nick Gisclair was charged with the loss for the Lions, struggling in the eighth inning.
Despite the setback, the Lions showcased formidable hitting, with Watts, O’Neal, Walters, and Hall all achieving multi-hit performances. Notably, Southeastern tied a program record for home runs in a single season with 86.
This loss marks a significant moment in the tournament, eliminating the top-seeded Lions from contention.
