Press Release: Budapest Summit Addresses AI’s Impact on Society and Youth
Budapest, Hungary – The Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) hosted a pivotal summit on technology and society, highlighting the complex interplay between artificial intelligence (AI) and everyday life. Participants emphasized that while today’s AI advancements draw from 20th-century philosophies, they employ revolutionary machine learning tools.
Zoltán Cséfalvay, Head of MCC’s Future of Technology Workshop, pointed out Europe’s stagnation in AI innovation, particularly among startups. His recent research suggests that the future of technology hinges less on predicting outcomes and more on how society chooses to explore possibilities. While regulation is vital, too much can hinder development.
Panel discussions revealed alarming insights into social media’s adverse effects on youth. Experts called for bans on minors using these platforms, citing issues such as unrealistic standards, increased anxiety, and emotional detachment. They argued for a return to traditional educational methods as a means to safeguard children’s mental health, stressing the joint responsibility of parents and educators.
Gergely Böszörményi-Nagy, founder of BrainBar, raised questions about the true intelligence of AI, asserting that human creativity, born from suffering and depth, cannot be replicated by machines. The geopolitical landscape underscores this concern, with the US and China outpacing Europe in innovation, illustrated by the EU’s recent rejection of a merger that could have boosted global rail technology leadership.
The summit concluded with a strong message: despite AI’s growth, human imagination can thrive through mindful, responsible technological use, rooted in creativity and community values. In an age where tech dependency is on the rise, particularly among youth, fostering an environment conducive to genuine imagination is more critical than ever.
