Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles Alerts Residents to New Text Message Scam

Press Release: Louisiana Authorities Warn Residents of Text Message Scam

Louisiana State Police (LSP) and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) are warning residents about a deceptive text message scam that aims to steal personal information and impose unnecessary fees. Many Louisianans have reported receiving messages claiming they owe an “outstanding traffic ticket” and must pay immediately or face consequences.

In light of this fraudulent activity, the OMV urges people to ignore and delete any suspicious messages they may receive. To help residents avoid such scams, the OMV has provided several key tips:

  • Do not click on links from unsolicited messages or unverified sources.
  • Do not respond or share personal information via text.
  • Delete all suspicious texts and emails, reporting them at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  • Exercise caution regarding communications from unknown sources.
  • Verify messages come from legitimate sources.
  • Be vigilant for telltale signs of scams, such as vague URLs or poor grammar.

Importantly, the OMV does not send out threatening messages related to traffic violations. For official online services, residents are encouraged to visit the official OMV website at www.expresslane.org.
